CHAPTER 45

Audrey, 1.30 a.m.

Were these his last moments? Had he already run out of time? Audrey wandered through the snow-covered wilderness, cold winds raging around her, not knowing where to look. To think Jared would have made it to the neighbor’s house was far-fetched. It was dark, and the distance was too great. He could barely see.

“Jared!”

Audrey gasped as she saw his figure slumped over by a cluster of trees. She rushed over and fell at his side. He wasn’t moving. He didn’t stir.

“Jared!” she shouted again. “Wake up!”

She shook him violently, and finally his eyes fluttered. He immediately winced in agony, clutching at his belly. Audrey could see the dark stain on his shirt, and she knew that it was blood.

He was dying.

“Audrey, I’m sorry,” Jared moaned. “The bastards got me.”

“Tell me what to do,” Audrey said. “How do I help?”

“You can’t do anything.”

“Yes, I can! You’re not going to die!”

He rolled over away from her.

“Jared, please. You have to get up.”

“No.”

Audrey hit him. “Come on! Let’s go…”

He cried out, still reeling in pain.

“Just stay there then,” Audrey mumbled. “I’ll get an ambulance.”

Audrey ran back to the guest house, trying not to cry. She had to believe there was still a chance for him. She had to believe there was still time.

“Harper!” she shouted banging on the door. “Why is this door locked?!”

After a moment, Harper unlocked the door and stepped out. She had a phone at her ear, only half looking at Audrey. “Yeah, it’s just my cousin. Going crazy as usual.”

“Get off the phone!” Audrey yelled, lunging at her.

“Whoa, what’s your problem?” Harper replied, sidestepping her.

“They stabbed Jared,” Audrey said. “He’s dying. We have to help him.”

Harper made a face, and spoke into the phone. “I got to go. Call me back tomorrow.”

“Who are you talking to?!” Audrey yelled.

Harper hung up and turned back, rolling her eyes. “Where is he?”

“He’s just out in the paddock,” Audrey said. “Can I have your phone, please?”

“What happened to your phone?”

“Harper! This isn’t funny!”

Harper sighed. “Alright, alright. Here.”

Audrey quickly snatched the cell from her and opened up the browser. She found the number for Mt. Abigail’s medical center and placed a call.
